For the past 21 years, it has been Dr. Sugiyama's personal missionary work to lecture and teach orthodontic students at 51 universities worldwide. Dr. Sugiyama is a visiting professor at 39 universities throughout Asia and 12 universities in Central and South America. He teaches internationally to students less fortunate in third world countries, at his own expense. Dr. Sugiyama also donates orthodontic and dental supplies to the schools where he lectures.
Most of Dr. Sugiyama's teaching in Asia resulted after he was selected to lead a U.S. delegation of orthodontists to Mongolia and China in 1998. This was part of the Ambassador Program started by President Eisenhower called People to People. In this program, people from various professional groups traveled to third world countries to improve the image of the U.S. following World War II. According to Dr. Sugiyama, his experience of going to those countries has proven to be one of the most meaningful in his professional and personal life. Dr. Sugiyama's travel to Mongolia and China in the People to People program revealed a personal need to serve and help young doctors in underdeveloped countries.
Dr. Sugiyama's main orthodontic subjects of interest and teaching are Multidisciplinary Care, Long Term Stability and Evidence-Based Orthodontics. Some of the countries included in Dr. Sugiyama's mission of service are: China, Japan, India, Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Colombia, Panama and Brazil.
