What We offer

Standard orthodontic appliances most commonly used today are designed based on Caucasian norms. Dr. Sugiyama has long noticed the effect these appliances have had on patients coming from Asian, Black and Latino backgrounds.

Fifteen years ago, he started noticing a much more flattened facial profile and lips pulled in on such patients, after orthodontic treatment. An increased risk of receding gums, root resorption and crow's feet wrinkles above the upper lip of some women were also found. After extensive research, Dr. Sugiyama found a striking similarity between these ethnic groups and a dramatic difference between them and Caucasians. Not only did anatomical facial measurements and angles greatly differ, but tooth structure, size, shape and angle were also distinct. This evidence-based scientific data led to his creation of the SEBA and ProTorque prescription appliances. These brackets are designed to treat Asians, Blacks and Latin/Hispanics with orthodontics, while still preserving their ethnic facial characteristics and keeping their smiles healthy.
